To Black Detroit, With Love
In "To Black Detroit, With Love" Detroit native I created a captivating exploration of the multifaceted history and vibrant present of Black Detroit through the lens of collage and photography. Drawing from personal experiences and a deep connection to the city, I delved into the classic narratives and everyday realities that define the Black Detroit experience.
Growing up just steps away from my grandfather's house, a symbol of generational continuity in the heart of Detroit, I developed a profound appreciation for the city's rich cultural tapestry. After graduating from Wayne State University and immersing myself in the downtown scene, I embarked on a journey that took me across the country and around the world. Yet, through my travels, I remained steadfast in my conviction that there is truly no place like Detroit.
In "To Black Detroit, With Love" I refuse to let Detroit's ever-changing landscape overshadow its storied past. Through meticulous collage work and evocative photography, I shine a light on the city's pivotal role as the birthplace of countless cultural movements and innovations. However, I also confronts the harsh realities of Detroit's history.
Through my art, I invite viewers to join me on a journey through time and space, celebrating the resilience, creativity, and enduring spirit of Black Detroit. "To Black Detroit, With Love" is not just an art show—it's a testament to the power of storytelling and the importance of honoring our collective heritage.
