Tiara Boyd
The Esthi Queen
“I had to prove it to myself, I found something I like, something I enjoy, and I was going to find a way to use it to live comfortably.”
Tiara Boyd grew up on the East Side of Detroit and always had bright and bold dreams of her future. The first career she was interested in was Cardiology. The idea came to her when her grandma’s boyfriend told her, “instead of breaking hearts you can save them.” She also wanted to be a High School English Teacher and at one point she even wanted to follow in the famous Radio and TV host Wendy Williams's footsteps.
In school, she was ahead of her time. She spent her time cheerleading and hanging with the older crowd. “I was a writer and I would write entries into HAP Balanced Living Magazine. Eventually, she was published and received an award for it. At that point, she says she stopped wanting to be a teacher because “I can write better than I can speak.”
Boyd decided to take her skin matters into her own hands and attend Esthetician School at David Presly in Royal Oak. Although she originally began classes to figure out how to treat her own skin, she turned out to be a natural at the craft. She began to get rewarded in school, and started building amazing relationships with the clients she interacted with. Boyd became a requested student and she graduated early due to her accolades. It was 2018 and after going to school after school and studying subject after subject she said to herself, “okay I am good at this, I can make money in this, I think this is it for me.”
In the beginning of 2020, the world stopped with COVID hit. She says “I used that time to focus on my creativity. I started doing Tik Tok videos, and got back into my YouTube with making skits. I went back to writing. I figured out how to make lace wigs and I started practicing makeup.”
When the world slowly began to open back up she says people raced back saying “I was a wolf all quarantine.” In February of 2021, her building owners told her she was being evicted for missing payments during COVID quarantine.
She was hurt and confused but she wasn’t discouraged. She began looking for other spaces and that's when she found the new home for Esthi Queen Healing Spa in Hamtramck. She says, “when I met the property manager she gave me a hug. She loved my energy and was like this place is yours, we’re done looking for renters and I felt the same.”
Soon after securing the spot in Hamtramck, the previous building caught wind of it. She says, “they offered me my space back. I decided to keep it and have two locations.”
She prefers to see her clients at least once a month however some clients come in every two weeks. Now a days she is focused on expanding the business more than waxing. She wants to eventually become hands off of the services. She says, “I have people who want mentorship, I need more time off of clients to focus on helping them grow. I am pushing everyone to be better versions of themselves.”
